Rugby Library plans monster fun for school holidays

MONSTERS will take centre stage at Rugby Library today (Thursday August 6) when local children’s author Julia Wills takes her audience on a journey from the Amazonian rainforest to the halls of ancient Greece, shining a light on the beasties hiding there.

Julia, a former teacher at Guilsborough Primary School, has found success with her novels Fleeced and Rampage – which combine Greek myths, comedy and adventure to tell the story of the ghost-ram of the Golden Fleece who was left bald and furious after Jason and the Argonauts stole his beautiful coat. Her books are stocked nationwide and at The British Museum.

She will be at the library from 2-3pm.

Later in August there will be a visit from author and children’s storyteller Cat Weatherill at 2:30-4pm on Thursday August 13, which also aims to inspire and entertain younger readers with Cat’s true life adventures.

Meanwhile, hundreds of children across Rugby are already making the most of the library by signing up for the Summer Reading Challenge and taking part in summer holiday activities.

This year the Summer Reading Challenge theme is Record Breakers, challenging young readers to explore astonishing real-life achievements and world records.

At Rugby Library, more than 300 children have already signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge where 4-11 year olds can read six or more library books of their choice over the holiday and earn rewards along the way.

The medal presentation ceremony for the Summer Reading Challenge will be taking place on Tuesday September 8 (4.30-5.30pm) when Rugby Library hopes to replicate the largest building to ever be made out of cereal boxes.

Warwickshire County Council customers spokeswoman Coun Kam Kaur said: “It’s wonderful to see so many of our young people, not just in Rugby, but across Warwickshire taking part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. I wish everyone taking part the very best of luck.”

Free events at the library during the summer break include activities, stories and crafts around the record-breaking themes of Cool Tech, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic, People Power and Action! Adventure!

Events are free but must be booked in advance at the library or by calling 0300 555 8171.
