Building society celebrates 40 years in Rugby

BANKING on local charities, the Rugby branch of the Coventry Building Society has celebrated over 40 years in the town.

The branch originally opened on Church Street in 1972 before moving to Regent Street in August 1991 – meaning they are celebrating 25 years at their current premises.

Hina Morjaria, manager of the building society, said: “We’re very excited about celebrating our long association with Rugby, where we have provided much-needed banking services and developed really strong relationships with our members and the local community.

“Over the years we have supported a number of local charities, including the Friends of St Cross Hospital, who we raised over £171,000 for through our popular St Cross Saver affinity account.”

Each branch supports a local cause as part of their community work, with the Rugby branch working with Myton Hospice.

To help celebrate their office’s quarter-century anniversary, staff from the hospice were given a cheque for over £1,000.

Anita Burrows from Myton Hospice said: “It is thanks to support from the local community that we are able to offer all of our services to patients and their loved ones free of charge.

“This year it will cost £8.4million to provide our services so we are extremely grateful for the support we have received and continue to receive from both staff and members of the Coventry Building Society’s Rugby branch.”

Long standing Coventry members Peter and Liz Realf, whose son Stephen was cared for by Myton staff before he died of a brain tumour two years ago, said: “We’ve held accounts with the Coventry for years and remember when they moved to the Regent Street branch 25 years ago, which makes us feel very old.

“We’re really proud that our building society supports such a fantastic local charity as Rugby Myton Hospice.

“The support we had from Myton was invaluable and made a huge difference to Stephen’s quality of life as his illness progressed. Hopefully today’s donation will help Myton to continue the fantastic work they do.”
