Care home in Rugby rated outstanding

A CARE home in Rugby is quite literally outstanding.

Mill Green – which provides accommodation and personal care for up to 15 young adults, who may live with dementia, learning or physical disabilities or a life limiting condition – has been rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Inspectors found staff at the Newbold Road home, run by WCS Care, were caring and compassionate, and those being looked after were being provided with safe, responsive, effective and well-led care.

Acosia Nyanin, CQC’s head of inspection for adult social care, told The Observer: “Our inspection team were impressed by the level of care observed at Mill Green.

“People were at the heart of the service. Staff understood the importance of being partners-in-care with people who lived at the home. People were supported to maintain their preferred and familiar routines and habits, which made them content and relaxed. Staff took time to understand people’s histories and dreams and encouraged them to be ambitious in making decisions about their lives.

“The range of staff skills and specialisms ensured the best possible care and support. Healthcare professionals made special arrangements to support people with life limiting conditions, in recognition of the quality of care they received at the home.

She added a “very caring environment” existed at Mill Green.

“People took pleasure in staff’s thoughtfulness and kindness and valued their friendship. Care staff valued people’s experience and opinions and encouraged them to live with meaning and purpose every day.

“People and relatives told us the home felt like a safe place to be. One person told us, “I’ve not felt safer in a long time.” They told us this was because they knew the staff were genuinely concerned about their welfare.

“All of this meant people received a high standard of care, which is why it has been rated outstanding.”

Christine Asbury, Chief Executive for WCS Care, was obviously delighted with the inspection report.

She added: “We work hard to ensure that people get the highest quality of care at every WCS Care home.

“Everyone living and working at Mill Green is incredibly proud of this achievement and we’re really pleased that we’ve been recognised for our highly responsive, effective and caring approach.

“Ensuring that people can enjoy their lives and carry on doing the things they’ve always done is the most important thing to us.”
