MP delivers post office petition to parliament

A PETITION protesting against village Post Office closures has been delivered to parliament by MP Mark Pawsey.

The petition, signed by more than 1,500 people, was set up to alert parliament to the shutting down of two post offices in Long Lawford and Bulkington.

Residents signed the document to try to persuade officials to re-open the post offices in order to continue to serve the local community.

The campaign to launch the petition was backed by local councillors, residents and members of the Rugby Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition.

Mr Pawsey said he had been working with the Post Office to see if alternative locations could be found to house branches in both villages.

But while the Bulkington branch is set to relocate to another retailer in the area, a Long Lawford location is still being sought.

Mr Pawsey said: “The Post Office is an integral part of the community in both villages, particularly for elderly residents, and the news that the branches were to close came as a great shock.

“The petitions were signed by over 1,500 residents, proving just how vital these facilities are for local people and I was very pleased to be able to present them in Parliament to highlight what an important issue this is.

“I am obviously delighted a new Post Office branch will soon open in Bulkington, restoring services to the heart of the main shopping area in the village.

“I know discussions are ongoing in Long Lawford and I will continue to work with both the Post Office, local councillors and the community to ensure that alternative services are put in place.”
