Pancake race means new lease of life for Rugby girl Mia

A NEW lease of life awaits a young Rugby girl with cerebral palsy and epilepsy – the happy result of this year’s annual Ladies’ Fancy Dress Charity Pancake Race.

Crowds gathered to watch over 30 costumed runners flip, slip and trip their way through the town centre to raise money for Mia Williams, 9.

Mia was born without eyes, suffers from low muscle tone and is unable to walk, stand, sit or raise herself from a lying position without adult support.

But with the estimated £1,600 raised by the race, her family will be able to buy the Brooke School pupil a Safe Chair that will allow her to sit independently.

This year’s race winner – for the second year running – was Shareen Smith of Wellingtons Nursery. The men’s race winner was Oliver Hartwick of HSBC.

Hazel Glen of The Bull Hotel raised the most sponsorship money (£516) while the three entrants from Rugby Borough Council won the fancy dress prize for their homemade Minions costumes.

Terry Byrne of organisers Rugby Rokeby Lions said: “The weather was very kind but somewhat cold, but thanks should go to all the runners who braved it and their sponsors for their much appreciated support.”
