Princethorpe family's fundraising is 'last resort' for baby to live normal life

A WORRIED mum is appealing for help to correct her baby son’s misshapen skull ‘before it is too late’.

Danny Prothero was diagnosed with flat head syndrome – also know as plagiocephaly – when he was just three months old.

Despite health visitors telling mum-of-three Hayley the issue would correct itself given time, the problem has got worse, leaving her concerned her seven month-old son’s future health and well-being is at risk.

The 31-year-old from Princethorpe told the Observer: “Without treatment Danny’s future will be affected.

“My son will struggle to take part in childhood activities like bike riding or riding a scooter as he will be unable to wear a safety helmet.

“It can affect his psychological well-being and studies show links between the syndrome and a number of developmental and physical health problems.”

Since her son’s diagnosis, Hayley has tried other unsuccessful treatments, including pillows designed specifically to treat the condition.

Now she feels her last resort is to buy Danny a specially made helmet which would reshape his skull. It would need to be worn 23 hours a day for around four months to correct the syndrome.

The helmets – which used to be free on the NHS – are only available privately at a cost of £2,500. The family have set up a fund-raising page.

Hayley – who lives with her partner and three sons – said: “Due to his age we are quickly running out of time to correct his bone posture.

“We would do anything for our children to try to give them the best life we can but unfortunately we are really struggling to raise the money for our baby’s treatment.

“We have tried other ways of getting the money but we are now hoping that the fund-raising page we have set up will help massively.

“Every penny will be gratefully received and ensure a much happier future for my baby boy.”
