Remember: Rugby fireworks to go off on fifth of November

THE RUGBY Round Table will light up the sky when they hold their annual charity fireworks display on the fifth of November.

Celebrating its 65th display, the Round Table group will be welcoming guests to the Whinfield Rec on Clifton Road for this year’s event.

Born out of an idea to help local orphan children, the group held its first fireworks display on November 5, 1951. Since then the event has gone on to raise thousands of pounds each year to help local charities and good causes.

The evening’s theme, ‘Remember Remember’, follows the obvious reminder of the date – the fifth of November – but also a number of other special anniversaries.

The event will remember the 100th anniversary of the battle of the Somme, 90 years since Rugby Radio Station sent the country’s first transatlantic voice transmission to Houlton in America, and the Rugby Round Table’s 80th birthday.

As well as the fireworks spectacular, there will be live music and on-stage entertainment, starting at 4.30pm.

David Barley, chief executive of Round Table, said: “This is our 41st year of organising firework displays across the UK and our tablers are gearing up to make sure visitors are kept safe and entertained from start to finish.

“Our previous firework displays have helped us raise much-needed funds for local charities and we are keen to continue to show our support.”

There will be a free park-and-ride service, picking up from outside Lawrence Sheriff School, Clifton Road and Rugby Town Centre – with free parking in the John Barford Car Park from 3pm until 9pm on the day.

Tickets can be bought from www.rugbyfireworks.co.uk or at the event. Organisers say entry on the day without a ticket is not guaranteed, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
