Rugby charity shop recovers from break-in thanks to community kindness

A CHARITY shop hit with a four-figure repair bill after a heartless break-in is back up to ‘full speed’ – thanks to kind Rugbeians who came up with the cash.

Staff at the Headway charity shop in Clifton Road have thanked the community for coming to the rescue after thieves broke in and caused £1,000 worth of damage last October.

The charity, which helps people rebuild their lives following brain injury, was left to pick up the pieces after the thieves smashed through a roof, ransacked the store and stole a safe and a collection box.

But thanks to Paddox Primary School and a generous anonymous donor raising a combined £1,500, the ceiling has now been repaired, and broken interiors and donations that were destroyed have now been replaced – ensuring all funds raised in the shop go directly to those in urgent need of support after brain injury.

And the shop is now looking for new volunteers to keep the money rolling in.

Shop Manager Louise Revan said: “We are immensely grateful for the local community’s incredible efforts to help the charity get back on its feet.

“Now we are back up to full speed, we are looking to expand our team as it is only with the continued support of our loyal and enthusiastic volunteers can we keep providing a vital lifeline to local families affected by the devastating effects of brain injury with our helpline, nurses and emergency fund services.

Volunteer Andy Pigg said: “The Headway team feels like family to me now. People come through our doors from all walks of life and the rapport I’ve built up with our regular customers has given me a real sense of purpose.

“For many people, being part of the Headway team is about so much more than generating funds to support brain injury survivors.

“Volunteers range from local people who want to help a good cause in their spare time to survivors with a personal understanding of brain injury who are looking to re-learn lost skills or build their confidence.

“Whether you know someone who is living with a brain injury, or whether you just want to spend your free time helping people, you are very welcome to come along and find out more about Headway.”
