CHEERS rang out across the borough as Rugby celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Street parties and celebrations took place over the weekend in honour of Her Majesty’s big day, and even the great British weather failed to put a dampner on proceedings.

Members of Rugby First and Rugby Borough Council invited people from all faiths, backgrounds, races and age groups to join them in the gardens of St Andrew’s Church to mark the occasion.

Rev Imogen Nay welcomed Mayor Sally Bragg and a number of faith representatives and members of local charities to sing the national anthem together.

Party guests were also asked to sign a book of best wishes, which was personally sent to the Queen herself.

Special music performances were hosted in the church to get the party started, and a number of cakes were baked.

Boughton Leigh Infant School in Brownsover also held their own event – a special buffet lunch and balloon launch – and the St Andrew’s Benn School held a special service assembly to give thanks to the Queen for her work.

The Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Timothy Cox, became a guest of honour at a celebration held at Caldecott Park as he joined pupils from Clifton, Northlands, St Oswald’s and Rokeby primary schools. The group enjoyed an afternoon of traditional fun and games, including egg and spoon races, puppet shows, tea cup rides and a bouncy castle.

The event also ran alongside the ‘One Britain One Nation’ event which saw groups of people across the country sing the national anthem in unison to celebrate the Queen’s 90th.
