A FAMILY from Rugby who have been raising money in honour of their son who passed away 10 years ago are again holding a charity darts tournament.

Former Lawrence Sheriff pupil Joe Spooner died in 2005 at the age of 15 from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) after a cricket match.

Since then his parents Tracey and Stephen have been raising funds with the help of cardiac charity SADS UK to put 30 defibrillators into the community. The charity also recently revealed the Spooner family’s decade of fundraising amounted to more than £45,000.

Tracey said: “I’m grateful to everyone who has helped make this possible and so happy my wonderful boy’s memory lives on.”

This year’s event will be the 10th Joe Spooner darts tournament – hoping to raise even more for SADS UK.

Players can step up to the oche for the tournament at the Workers Club on Oliver Street on Sunday February 14 at 12.15pm.

There will be a men’s and ladies’ darts competition with trophies sponsored by Bradley Electrical. Entries are £4 and need to be submitted before February 8 – spectators are free.

The event will also feature a raffle and silent auction with a host of prizes, including an England bat and shirt signed by the Ashes-winning 2015 team, a caravan holiday in Skegness, a Leicester Tigers shirt signed by members of the championship winning 2009 side and a dart board signed by eight players including Kevin Painter and Luke Kennedy.

Tracey added: “We are still looking for donations for the raffle, auction and bottle tombola and would be very grateful if anyone can help with this. Also we have plenty of room for any players of any ability. Its a fun day out for a fantastic charity remembering my lovely son.”
