A RUGBY man has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of a robbery in the town.

Sean Ryan, of Holbrook Road, pleaded not guilty to stealing a handbag from a 79-year-old woman in Cross Street, Long Lawford on December 19, 2015.

But following a three-day trial at Coventry Crown Court, the 24-year-old was found guilty of the robbery and four separate counts of burglary in Coventry.

He was sentenced to two years in prison for one of the burglaries and 18 months for each of the other three.

The burglary sentences are to run concurrently with each other and consecutively with the robbery offence, making a total of seven years in prison.

Temporary Det Con Sean Whittaker, of Rugby CID, said: “Special thanks must go to out to the community in Long Lawford who came forward and assisted police in the investigation and helped us secure a conviction.”
