RUGBY’S MP has called for unity following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.
Conservative MP Mark Pawsey voted to remain in the EU, but said he had always listened to and respected the views of those who wanted to leave.
He said: “Here in Rugby, residents turned out in significant numbers to vote and it is clear that most wanted us to leave the European Union, in a result that mirrored the mood across the majority of the country.
“I fully respect that decision and will continue to dedicate my time to ensuring that the interests, and livelihoods, of local people are protected.
“We now face a period of uncertainty and it is imperative that the Government does all that is within its power to restore stability, and reassure financial markets and our trading partners across the world that the UK remains a thriving, dynamic, growing economic powerhouse that is still open for business.
“We now all move forward together united in our common goal to ensure that our country remains a forward looking, tolerant, thriving European nation.”
Leave voter and West Midlands UKIP MEP James Carver said: “This is a tremendous day for Britain and a victory for our democratic process.
“I am humbled by the amount of votes for leaving and delighted that the West Midlands returned the highest vote to leave at 59.3%.
“This is not a time for gloating, it is a time for building bridges in a more democratic country.
“We have a bold bright future ahead which is to be eagerly welcomed and we must now work hard to control our borders and establish trade deals both with the EU and our Commonwealth countries and put the Great back in Britain.”
