A HEARTFELT tribute has been made to MP Jo Cox by her Rugby counterpart.

Mrs Cox, the Labour MP for Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire, died after being shot and stabbed in the street on Thursday afternoon (June 16), following a weekly constituency surgery.

The 41-year-old was taken by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary where armed police were stationed outside.

A media conference at police headquarters in Wakefield later announced the mother-of-two had died from her injuries in hospital.

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey said: “I didn’t know Jo but watched her speak from the other side of the Chamber where I always heard her stand up for her constituency, and for her home town.

“I am sure that she would have become a rising star within her Party and my thoughts are with her family at this terrible time.”

He added her death had reminded MPs of the risks and challenges they face.

He added: “The Parliamentary authorities have rightly advised all of us to look carefully at our security arrangements; something I shall be doing in the coming days.”

The Union Flag at Rugby Town Hall was at half mast on Friday (June 17) to pay tribute to Mrs Cox.

Rugby Borough Council leader Coun Michael Stokes said: “Absolutely tragic news about the death of Jo Cox MP, by all accounts a life long public servant who always wanted to serve as an MP.”

It is understood a man – named locally as 52-year-old Tommy Mair – was arrested near the scene following the attack.
