Rugby raises a mug for cancer charity

THOUSANDS of pounds were raised by Rugbeians for cancer charity Macmillan on the day of its famous annual coffee morning last week.

A SPONSORED head-shave was the centrepiece of furniture company NEJ Stevenson’s eighth Macmillan morning.

Employee Paul Sewell, a local dad of four, bravely sacrificed his barnet in the name of a close friend whom he lost to cancer in his 20s.

He said: “Please don’t call me brave for having a haircut; I’m doing it for those who are truly brave.”

Clients, families and friends came in their droves to the company’s headquarters and workshop in Church Lawford Business Centre, helping raise over £2,000.

Anya Court Care Home raised over £70. Lifestyles leader Emma Wheatley said: “We are really pleased how our coffee morning went. “We had a great turnout, and our residents thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful selection of our cakes donated by the local community and our team members.”

Staff at Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College enjoyed cakes and biscuits made by members of the school’s Inclusion Team. Head teacher Alison Davies said: “This event is close to the heart of several members of staff and we are pleased to support the Macmillan coffee morning every year. Our Inclusion Team did a wonderful job organising and running this event which was greatly enjoyed by the staff.”

MP Mark Pawsey went on a whistle-stop tour of coffee mornings, taking in events at Warwickshire College’s Rugby site, Rugby Free Primary School, Virgin Active and Motocross World.

He said: “It was a great pleasure to see all those in the community coming together to run coffee mornings. I was particularly impressed by the students at the college, who had worked together in order to host a coffee morning for other students and teachers.

“I am always inspired by the generosity of the people of Rugby and this year’s coffee morning was a great success for Macmillan.”
