A HUNDRED pound fine was issued to a man in Rugby yesterday (Thursday April 21) for refusing to hand over his alcohol.

He was fined under the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) which covers the town centre.

PSPOs give police and council officers powers to prevent people from drinking or using drugs in a public place.

The fine was issued by officers who were touring the town with a sniffer dog in search of people carrying drugs.

Police dog Bliss was taken around the town centre, Technology Drive and Murray Road as part of a local drugs operation.

No drugs were found, although one person was searched.

PC Andy Crouch said: “We didn’t catch anyone with drugs today in Rugby but it has sent out a strong message to anyone that if you are carrying drugs we are on the look out for you and being proactive in tackling the use of drugs in the town.”

Anyone with information about drug crime can contact police by calling 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
