A ‘VICIOUS’ burglar has been imprisoned for three-and-a-half years after he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulted her.

Callum McAusland, 28, pleaded guilty to charges of actual bodily harm, criminal damage and burglary at Warwick Crown Court on Friday (February 5) and was sentenced to 32 months in prison.

In the early hours of Saturday December 26 2015, McAusland forced entry to his ex-girlfriend’s Rugby home, punched her in the face and headbutted her, inflicting serious facial injuries.

He was also charged with an unrelated burglary in Earl Street at 8:30pm on Christmas Day, when he broke into a property and stole electrical equipment.

In addition to the 32 months, the Judge ordered he serve 10 months as part of a previous suspended sentence.

Investigating officer DC Gareth Unett said: “I am pleased with the sentence.

“This was a vicious assault which caused the victim considerable pain and distress, and will impact on her for the rest of her life.

“The victim was extremely brave and managed to raise help from neighbours. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their assistance in securing this conviction.”
