Can Rugby Town FC Ever Be Promoted?

Rugby Editorial 28th Nov, 2025   0

Rugby Town FC finished the 2024/25 season in the 19th spot in the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division, which would have seen them get relegated from the league.

However, the team was reprieved from relegation due to Hinckley LRFC withdrawing from the competition and entering voluntary liquidation. As a result, Rugby Town FC stayed up and compete in the same division this year.

With a better start to the season than last year, it’s time to talk about their chances of going up and what the team would have to do to get promoted.

To discuss Rugby Town FC’s way up, we first have to look at how the pyramid of English football is structured.

The Premier League sits at the very top (level 1) with the Championship (level 2) right below it.

Every season, two clubs from the Championship earn an automatic promotion to the Premier League, while those in spots three through six compete in the play-offs for the final promotion place.

This year, Coventry is the main favourite to go up, with teams like Middlesbrough and Stoke City right behind them.

Platforms such as recommended betting sites are at the forefront of these calculations.

They use statistics and current rankings to predict the two lucky clubs that will move on to the higher league.

Similar principles apply all the way down the football pyramid. In the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division (level 8), where Rugby Town FC competes, the winner of the league goes up automatically, while teams in spots two through five go to the play-offs.

The winner of the play-offs, together with the champions, earns promotion to the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Premier Division (level 7).

Therefore, for the Valley to go up, they would have to finish either first or in a spot two through five and win the play-offs in their current division to go up.

Competing at level 7 is, of course, more demanding and requires stronger squads. However, moving up would also bring Rugby Town FC one step closer to levels 5 and 6.

How likely the team is to go up is a different topic. Last year, they were fighting to stay at the current level and would now be playing in the United Counties League again had Hinckley LRFC not withdrawn.

The club, in an official statement, said that they were already preparing for life in a lower division again, but that they’ll be embracing the opportunity to play in the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division again.

Things look brighter this year, and Rugby Town FC currently sits in 13th place in the league, which is a significant improvement compared to last year.

They’re seven points away from fifth-placed Lichfield City, and a play-off spot doesn’t look unattainable.

The goal now is to keep climbing up and build enough momentum to challenge the stronger sides later in the season.

Carlton Town look like the main contenders to win the league and are currently six points above second-placed Belper Town.

Their confidence will only have grown after a 5–1 victory over Sutton Coldfield Town in their most recent match.
