Town centre event to welcome Year of the Horse this weekend

THE YEAR of the horse will be welcomed in Rugby town centre this weekend.

The town’s Chinese New Year celebration event takes place in Market Place on Sunday (February 22) between 11.30am and 3.30pm.

There will be a full programme of music and dance, including bamboo flutes, violins, drums, a fan dance and TaiChi.

Visitors will also be encouraged to try their hands at calligraphy, origami, face painting, lantern making and tea tasting, sample some traditional Chinese food, and pick up a red envelope and coins – a traditional new year gift symbolizing good luck and happiness.

The centrepiece of the day will be the procession, which will involve lion and dragon dancing, lanterns and drums. It will leave Market Place at around 11.45am.

The free event is being organised by the Rugby Warwickshire Chinese Society in partnership with Rugby First and Rugby Borough Council.

Amy Zhang, joint organiser and Chairperson of the Rugby Warwickshire Chinese Society, said: “Chinese New Year is such an important celebration for the Chinese community and I am so pleased that we will be able to share the day in Rugby town centre.

“The day will provide a real taste of Chinese culture and provide lots of fun and enjoyment for everyone, and I am keen for people to join in and enjoy the activities, including the procession.”
