Modern day Wombles clear rubbish from the River Avon

SEVEN shopping trolleys, a car bumper and 40 bags of rubbish weighing half a tonne.

That was the product of a litter pick along a section of the River Avon through Rugby by a team of modern day Wombles.

It was collected by 25 staff from the town’s two McDonalds restaurants and the Tesco superstore on Leicester Road as part of the Keep Britain Tidy’s Love Where You Live anti-littering campaign.

McDonalds’ franchisees Glyn Pashley and Martin Cuthbert even dressed as the beloved children’s characters who famously collected and recycled rubbish on Wimbledon Common

“This is one of 40 events we’ve planned this year, which should go some way to raising awareness about the need to protect our environment,” Mr Cuthbert said.

“Clearly it’s irresponsible to throw away litter – not to mention shopping trolleys, car bumpers and the like – but hopefully this has gone some way to making a difference locally.”

The litter pickers were supported by Mayor Ramesh Srivastava and MP Mark Pawsey (s)
