Stretton councillor thanked for near half-century of service

A PARISH councillor has retired after nearly half a century representing residents.

Coun Ian Smith, of Stretton on Dunsmore Parish Council, was honoured this week as he retired after 47 years of service.

When Coun Smith was elected, Harold Wilson was Prime Minister, the Vietnam War was raging and Cliff Richard topped the charts with his hit Congratulations – and ever since, Coun Smith has been at the centre of village life.

A bench has been placed in the village to commemorate Coun Smith’s service, which also included many years as a Rugby Borough Coucillor and a Warwickshire County Councillor.

Coun Howard Roberts, county and borough councillor for the area, said: “Ian’s service to the council and village over those 47 years is tremendous.

“Stretton has changed in those years, but Ian’s continued presence has ensured stability and experience.

“The Parish Council will be commemorating Ian’s long and successful service with a presentation at his last meeting. My memories from working with him over many years will be that of an independent-minded, tenacious parish councillor who always wanted the best for his village.”
