HUNTERS Lane Recycling Centre needs to extend its opening hours, say local Labour councillors.
Rugby Borough Council’s task group for local recycling centres has expressed concern about the tip’s ability to cope with the expanding population.
They are calling for the County Council to review the opening hours, which during the summer months are 9.30am to 3.15pm.
The Borough Council’s environment spokesman Coun Dr Mark Williams has written to Warwickshire County Council expressing concern.
Labour county and borough councillor Maggie O’Rourke said local people have contacted her because they were unhappy about the existing opening hours.
She added: “Daventry’s recycling centre is open from 8am until 8pm in the summer, and there are no vehicle restrictions.
“The Borough Council are the authority responsible for giving planning permission for all of the new housing developments in Rugby, which I believe is one of the reasons for the increased demands on local services.
“I am sure that local people would like to see any additional monies from the New Homes Bonus invested in local services, which would include extending the opening hours of the recycling centre at Hunters Lane.”
The borough’s Labour group is asking the Borough Council to undertake a review and engage the local community to get their views about whether the opening hours need to be extended.
