GIFTED young minds from Rugby are in the running to win top prizes at the National Science and Engineering Competition 2016.
Teams of students from Rugby High School have been named as finalists, already beating out hundreds of other schools across the West Midlands.
Phoebe Attridge, Riddhi Sharma, Ella Dixon, May Burke, Katie Wang and Celestine Adlemant were named finalists after their design for an ‘eco hotel’ for Rugby station.
And another team, featuring Hannah Brookes, Nethmi Foneska, Hetvi Bhatt and Morgan Ansell, were also named for their work in experimenting into issues related to dental health care.
Budding scientist Jamine Simms, also from Rugby High School, is tipped for the prize in the intermediate category for her research into sleeping disorders.
And Simran Johal has made it through in the senior category for advanced research into robotics.
Paul Jackson, Chief Executive of EngineeringUK which organises the fair, congratulated the finalists on their nomination.
He said: “Being part of the National Science and Engineering Competition national finals is an exceptional achievement for young inventors, scientists and engineers. The judging panel will have a tough decision in selecting the winners at The Big Bang Fair in March.”
Imran Khan, Chief Executive of the British Science Association which runs the competition, added: “The standard of work from the finalists this year has been incredibly high, and it is so inspiring to see such creative and thought-provoking projects from the young people who enter the Competition.
“It is fantastic to see these young scientists and engineers go on and become advocates for science, both in the sector and beyond.”
The competition, organised by the British Science Association, is an annual contest open to school pupils aged 11 to 18 and gives participants the chance to compete for international experiences and prizes worth over £50,000.
Winners will be announced at a ceremony as part of the Big Bang Fair at the NEC in Birmingham, which inspires young people to consider a career in science, technology, engineering and maths. The event takes place from March 16-19.
