Suspicious package prompts bomb scare at Rugby scrapyard

BOMB experts have given the ‘all-clear’ after a suspected explosive was found in a car seconds before it was due to be crushed.

A 200-metre police cordon was set up around Charles Trent Cars in Newbold Road – near the Avon Mill roundabout – after a suspicious item was found in the boot of a car, which had been on the site for a month waiting to be crushed.

Explosives experts attended as a precautionary measure, but declared the item was not dangerous.

Inspector Daf Goddard said: “Further enquiries are being made to establish why the item was in the vehicle but there was no danger to the public at any point during this incident.”

“Staff at the yard rightly called us and we contacted explosives experts as a precautionary measure.

“We would like to thank everyone for their patience while we managed this incident.”

A police spokesman confirmed the incident was not being treated as suspicious, and officers were satisfied there was no intention to cause harm, damage or disruption.
