Double delight for Rugby Town Juniors at Southam Festival

IT WAS an incredible weekend of sporting success for Rugby Town Juniors with two teams winning their respective age group at the Southam Festival.

The club’s Under-9 Lions lined up against some of the best teams from Warwickshire and Norhamptonshire area on Saturday and after a few tense matches, they arrived at the last group game needing a win over Daventry to progress to the knockout stage.

It was going to be a difficult task for the young Lions against the table toppers but two early goals and some heroic defending guaranteed them a place in the play-off.

Despite dominating their semi-final match, the Lions could not find a breakthrough and after the game went to penalties, it was the Lions who held their nerve to book a place in the final.

The final followed the same pattern and after another string of saves in the penalty shootout, Rugby Lions were crowned as champions of the Under-9 category.

Rugby’s Under-11 Pumas also tasted success at the Southam Festival after going through the whole tournament without conceding a goal and scoring no fewer than 20 themselves.

The group stage proved to be fairly comfortable but the semi-finals proved to be a more closely fought affair with debutant Thai scoring a free kick in the last minute to decide the outcome of the match.

Rugby came up against Warwick in the final and penalties followed a 0-0 draw with Rugby clinching the win to claim the cup which was their 11th trophy in 25 months.
