Ancient Warks woodlands being linked by major tree-planting project

THOUSANDS of trees will bring life back to a former quarry as part of a project to link up three ancient woods.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust will plant just under 7,000 trees at its newest nature reserve Bubbenhall Meadows – and the public are invited to join in.

The new woodland will connect Bubbenhall Wood, Wappenbury Wood and Ryton Wood to create a bigger, better home for wildlife.

Karl Curtis, Reserves and Community Engagement Officer for Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, said: “By joining up these ancient woodlands we will create wildlife corridors which are vital, as wildlife cannot travel between isolated patches of habitat.

He added wildlife would be able to move through the joined-up woodland once the trees were established, and rare species such as dormice may move in.

He said: “Restoring the quarried areas is important and will boost the links for wildlife between the woodlands.

“We want wildlife to thrive and re-colonise our landscape so future generations can encounter, experience and enjoy our natural heritage. And so that we can too.

“We’re planting oak, silver birch, goat willow, hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, aspen, elder, dogwood, spindle and field maple – chosen to reflect local woodland. They will be planted by a local contractor, our dedicated volunteers and members of the public if they want to join in.”

The drop-in tree planting session takes place on Saturday February 4 from 10am-1pm. Tools and advice provided. All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
