RUNNERS put the fun back into fundraising when they braved a cold but fine morning to take part in the annual Rugby Pancake Race.
Catherine Best of Brethertons Solicitors beat 19 other competitors to claim the race trophy and shield – the latter of which she will retain for the next 12 months.
Sarah Parr of The Nest won the award for the best fancy dress thanks to her eye-catching hedgehog costume.
The winner for the most sponsorship raised – £424 – was Claire Waleczek of Rugby Borough Council, who was running her 25th race having raised around £7000 in that time. She received a special mention from Mayor Sally Bragg, who presented the prizes.
Organisers Rugby Rokeby Lions Club raised over £1,000 for disability charity New Directions, to help them build a new sensory garden at their Richmond Lodge supported living complex – with more sponsorship money yet to come in.
The charity needs to raise £20,000 for the garden – which will include lawns, seating, flowerbeds and an illuminated water feature.
Lion Terry Byrne said: “The event was well supported by an enthusiastic crowd of onlookers and a great day was had by all.
“Many many thanks to all those who raced, supported us and came along to watch – their support over the years has been brilliant.”
