Lutterworth lad Alex shares good news in fight against cancer

AN INSPIRATIONAL Lutterworth lad fighting cancer in the US has had an ‘all-clear’ in his latest biopsy results.

Alex Goodwin, 9, has been receiving treatment for Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, at specialist medical centres in Kansas since December.

While the courageous kid must still go through radiation therapy this week to destroy remaining cancer cells, he happily shared the news of his biopsy – an examination of tissue removed from his body – with his 23,000 army of Twitter followers.

In a video message, he said: “My biopsy results came back and they say it’s all clear!

“My cancer hasn’t appeared in my pelvis or my tailbone, but the cells that are left have to be destroyed by my radiation therapy which is coming up next week.

“You guys have a great, swell day and I’ll see you all soon!”

After doctors operated on Alex in January, they said he would ‘make it through’ despite having a tough road ahead.

But Alex, from Dunton Bassett near Lutterworth, will require treatment for many years to come, including further surgery, radiotherapy, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy – all of which will need to take place in Kansas to maximize his chances of survival.

In March, he spent nearly three weeks in limbo after being told he would have to leave the US two months before the treatment would have been complete.

But the Goodwins took their case to the top levels of the UK and US governments and Alex was given permission to stay.

Throughout his ordeal, Alex – who loves nature, natural history and science – has kept a smile on his face for his social media followers.

His family and friends are continuing to raise funds for Alex’s rehabilitation through childhood and beyond – so far raising around £5,000 of their £230,000 goal. Visit www.gofundme.com/alexgjourney to donate.
