Borough stay top after Anstey Town win

Rugby Editorial 12th Oct, 2017   0

FOOTBALL: RUGBY Borough continued their fine start to the season with a dominant six-goal win against Anstey Town.

A tight opening 15 minutes passed with neither side creating a clear attempt on goal.

But eventually Borough found the break needed to take the lead on 24 minutes when Gerard McGahey slotted home from a Joe Henderson flick.

The goal settled the home side down somewhat, and it was just a few minutes before the lead was increased by Henderson after latching on to a long pass and shrugging off two defenders to lob the keeper with a great touch.

Anstey worked hard to create chances but failed to hit the back of the net.

It got worse for the visiting side when Ollie Chater made it 3-0 on the stroke of half time with a diving header from Gerard McGahey.

Ryan Byrne made his comeback from injury after half time when replacing Will Heath, himself unknowingly injured earlier with a fractured hand.

Rugby struck early in the second half, mirroring the teamwork at the end of the first with McGahey assisting and Chater finishing.

The home side were in full control of the match. And they quickly made it 5-0 through Luke Pritchard following a tight angle pass from Ollie Chater.

Ollie Chater had a chance to score his hat trick when Borough were awarded a penalty, but his kick hit the post.

Borough scored once more when Luis Corcoran slotted home after an impressive run from Kane Finney.

The win ensured Borough remain top of the league table.
