Autistic Rugby kids to turn railway children for the day

Rugby Editorial 1st Nov, 2017   0

AUTISTIC kids from Rugby can be railway children for the day on Saturday (November 4).

The Rugby Autism Network (RAN) charity is organising a ‘railway adventure’ where children can learn about, familiarise themselves with, and build confidence around the railway.

The day out will include a tour of Rugby Station, and a train journey to Birmingham International where children can have some quiet time in the waiting area, ride on the monorail, grab a bite to eat, or view aircraft at Birmingham Airport.

Paul Clarke, a member of RAN’s consultation team, said: “As father of a child with autism and an employee of a company that supports those with disabilities, I am keen to get across the message of equality, diversity and inclusion.

“Virgin Trains have provided a wonderful opportunity to support this and members of the Rugby Station team have taken a personal interest in making this a positive experience for everyone. This is great to see and I am very grateful.

“This will be a fun and positive experience. There is also a serious part of the day. Safety will theme throughout the day and we will be highlighting some of the considerations and dangers surrounding this important transportation link.”

Rugby Autism Network provides parent-led support for those living in and near Rugby, offering signposting to specialist services and advice and access to vital experiences such as the railway day.

Run by volunteers and reliant on donations and grants, the charity supports over 130 families and welcomes new members every month.

The railway day starts at 10.50am on Saturday (November 4). Visit www.rugbyautismnetwork.co.uk or email [email protected] for more information.
