Thieves use explosives to blow open cash machine at Rugby store

POLICE are hunting thieves who used explosives to blow open a cash machine in Rugby in the early hours of the morning.

They targeted the ATM at the Co-op store in Scholars Drive, Cawston, around at 3.40am on Friday.

A witness, who heard the explosion, described seeing two men, dressed all in black, running quickly towards Bilton School field carrying a white bin liner.

Police were on the scene five minutes later where they found the front window of the store smashed and the explosion damaged ATM.




Although there was significant damage inside the store it had not affected the safety of the building

The thieves got away with an unknown amount of cash.


Police made an immediate search of the area in an attempt to catch the culprits and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously.

Detectives are also keen to hear from anyone who saw a blue Golf or a black Jeep driving at speed in or around the Rugby with three or four people inside.
