Broadway hit turned Hitchcock classic coming to Rugby Theatre

A PLAN B is needed in Dial M For Murder at Rugby Theatre.

When an ex-tennis pro carries out a plot to murder his wife, not all goes to plan and he has to improvise.

The 1954 movie became one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best-loved films, but before the big screen version it was a massive stage hit both in the West End and on Broadway.

Rugby Theatre will be staging Frederick Knott’s play, originally performed on BBC television, from Saturday (March 3) to March 10.

Director Simon Burbe said: “It might be set in 1952, but Dial M for Murder feels very modern with its themes of love triangles and domestic, physical and psychological violence. It has lost none of its edge over the years.

“Knott isn’t as well-known as Hitchcock, but he was also the author of the chilling Wait Until Dark. In fact, he only ever wrote three plays – but what brilliant plays they were.

“Set in one claustrophobic room, Dial M has really stood the test of time. It’s a very tense psychological thriller with twists and turns throughout, right up to the end.”

The Rugby cast includes Lee Bunting as Tony, Tracey Seymour as his wife Sheila, and Tom Browning as Captain Lesgate.

Simon added: “The cast have worked hard to build up the tension, while the fantastic backstage people have delivered an amazing set, brilliant costumes, excellent props of the right period, and a fabulous lighting plot.”
