Rugby Gaels maintain momentum

Rugby Editorial 13th Apr, 2018   0

RUGBY Gaels continued their unbeaten start to the Warwickshire Intermediate League Division Three season with a hard-fought two-point victory over rivals St Josephs GAA in Derby.

Paul McGrath’s men had possession and territory but were unable to put daylight between themselves and the Derbymen.

At half-time Rugby lead by 6-4, thanks to a six-point goal from Conor Shaw.

The excellent Robbie O’Hanlon scored three points and the returning Fenton Collins added another.

Alex Baalham Donaldson and Mark Madine completed the scoring for the half.

The second half continued along similar lines with the Gaels having the majority of possession and territory.

The half back line of Pat O’Brien, Mike Cremin and Steve Clarke proved difficult opponents to break down.

When Conor Shaw added his second goal it was hoped that Rugby might pull away.

However, St Josephs had other ideas and the full back line of Ryan Ward and Michael O’Meara did not yield under pressure.

Ryan Reynolds in goal also helped with some vital interventions.

It was captain Lewis Fairgrieves who completed the scoring to edge Rugby to an excellent away win and top of Division Three.
