Community shop back in business following flood

A COMMUNITY shop in Rugby is back in business after a devastating flood destroyed months of hard work by young adults with learning difficulties.

Back in March a burst pipe saw water pour into the Works 4 Me shop in High Street for two days and nights before the supply could be cut off, amid a weekend of burst pipes and interrupted water supplies caused by thawing ice.

But the not-for-profit social enterprise is now up and running again at new premises in Regent Street – provided by town landlord Abid Mirza – after supporters rallied to the aid of the group raising £1,426 via the Just Giving page.

Co-director and co-founder Kate Morris thanked all those who had supported the project and was now looking forward to a busy future.

She told The Observer: “Works 4 Me support young adults with additional needs, who are capable of working but cannot access mainstream jobs due to their difficulties. Clients get involved in the day to day running of the shop including upcycling donated furniture for resale, handling money and interacting with customers.

“This encourages a work ethic, giving clients a sense of achievement and pride in what they produce, and enables them to

develop a wide range of skills.”

And Kate is hoping to welcome more participants with the backing of businesses in the borough.

She added: “Unfortunately, some young people who would benefit from sessions at Works 4 Me find funding an issue and when it is not granted are particularly vulnerable to becoming isolated and depressed.

“Works 4 Me are looking for local companies to help sponsor adults with learning difficulties to attend sessions from as little as £45 a week. A donation such as this could make a very big difference indeed.”
