A NEW surgery has opened in Brownsover – nearly four years after the area’s old medical centre closed its doors.
The £2.3million Brownsover Medical Centre opened in Bow Fell today (Monday January 28), two and a half years behind the original schedule.
The new purpose-built centre was developed in partnership between NHS Coventry and Rugby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS England and NHS Property Services.
The 624 square metre facility includes five consultation rooms, two treatment rooms and a waiting room which can seat up to 34 people. It has been designed to support up to 10,000 patients by 2030, based on expected population growth for the area over the next decade.
Over 10,000 Brownsover residents have been without a local surgery since Brownsover Medical Practice closed in March 2015, and have had to travel over a mile to a temporary surgery in Lower Hillmorton Road for a GP appointment.
The new surgery was originally due to open in the summer of 2016, before the date was revised to early 2018, and then to summer 2018.
Feedback from Brownsover residents has been incorporated into the new centre, from the choice of organisation to provide medical services to the interior paint scheme.
Andrea Green, chief officer for the CCG, said: “The opening of the Brownsover Medical Centre is a significant occasion for the community of Brownsover. By being so heavily involved in and vocal about the development, local residents have ensured the practice has been designed to meet their needs and the needs of the future population of the area.
“I would like to thank each person who provided feedback, shared their ideas or took part in the various engagement events over the years – you can take pride in the knowledge your input has made a real difference.”
Rugby MP Mark Pawsey said: “The new practice has been much anticipated and my constituents in the Brownsover area have been incredibly patient in waiting for this new replacement facility to be delivered.
“I am very pleased that I have been able to work closely with the Brownsover Patients Action Group and the CCG throughout the process and that all our hard work has now paid off.”
Mayor Tom Mahoney will cut the ribbon of the new medical centre at an official ceremony on Thursday February 14.
