Newborn lambs welcomed into the world at Moreton Morrell College

SPRING was in the air as families welcomed newborn lambs into the world.

Young and old flocked to Moreton Morrell College, home to Nether Moreton Farm, to meet and even bottle-feed the new arrivals, of which there were more than 30.

As well as witnessing live lambing, families were introduced to the neighbouring meerkats, which are among over 100 species which live at the farm’s Animal Welfare Centre.

Visitors learned about how animals were cared for on the farm while some got a taste of the high life aboard a tractor.

The mixed farm is home to a flock of more than 500 sheep, 400 beef cattle, together with arable crops. It is a working commercial farm but also provides hands-on learning for agricultural and countryside management students.

It allows students to work directly with farm staff on a one-to-one basis and participate in all the daily duties including lambing, feeding, bedding and the general management of livestock.

Farm manager Henry Dingle said: “The weekend was a huge success with hundreds of families out enjoying the sunshine.

“I think they really appreciated the opportunity to see life on a working farm and understand what happens during lambing season.”
