Students dig deep to spruce up care home gardens

KIND Rugby College students have transformed the gardens of a care home.

Students on the college’s Prince’s Trust programme spent two weeks weeding, planting, trimming, painting, cleaning and tidying the gardens at Rugby Care Centre – just in time for spring.

They also cleaned out a water feature, created a striking eye-shaped plantation area, and built an entrance archway filled with lights to welcome people.

Before: the unkempt front garden.

After: the students weeded, trimmed and tidied the front garden, adding a striking eye-shaped plantation area.

They paid for it all through their own fund-raising efforts.

Speaking on behalf of the group, student Jodie Stevens said they were happy with the results.

“It made us feel proud,” she said. “We got out what we put in, which was all we hoped.

“The residents were ecstatic by the outcome as they could walk around the pathways and see the beautiful colours.

Jodie Stevens, Laura Lewandowska and Josh Rodrigues got a sense of the task ahead of them in the sensory garden.

The sensory garden now has a new lease of life.

“The staff were very happy – they gave us afternoon tea and treated us to some lovely cakes. They seemed very pleased with the outcome and said they would love for the gardens to be kept that way.

“We think this will have a positive outcome on the care home and the visitors because the cleanliness presents a warm welcome and the bright colours are very inviting.”

The group’s tutor Faye Lindsey said she couldn’t be more proud.

“Their dedication and work ethic has been outstanding,” she said. “The staff were very complimentary and thankful for what we had done.

“The gardens look fantastic and the students can now reflect on what they have accomplished and say ‘I did that!'”
