THE Cossar family had a turbulent 1,000cc Sidecar Speedway season opener in Leicester at the weekend.

Rugby’s Andy Cossar was the victim of a horrific crash, who was knocked unconscious and suffered shoulder, back, hip and pelvic injuries upon diagnosis at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The incident came when Cossar’s passenger – Jake Fumarola, lost his footing and flipped both of them out of the bike, at which point the onrushing Joe Mogg had no time to react.

Mark Cossar looked to avenge the unfortunate end to his father’s day by winning the following three races to qualify for the main final.

Joined by younger brother Tom, who came through the last chance semi-final – the pair eyed silverware in the grand finale.

The pairing of Gareth Williams and Matt Fumarola qualified with ease, but were forced to pull out after experiencing engine problems.

Mark stormed home to a finish with passenger Carl Blyth in tow, whilst his brother Tom and Wayne Rickards placed third – achieving their first ever Sidecar Speedway podium in the process.
