RUGBY Junior Triathlon Club opened their season in style with the Southam Junior Triathlon on Sunday.
21 of the club’s junior triathletes took on the course, which consisted of a swim in the Southam Leisure Centre pool, proceeded by a cycle and then a run around Southam College playing fields – with varying distances in place for each age group.
Chilly temperatures greeted the triathletes, but they fought on to record impressive results at the event.
In the eight-year olds event – consisting of a 50m swim, followed by an 800m bike ride and a 500m run, Jacob Hayward led the way for Rugby, coming in ninth with a time of 10:11, whilst Finlay Heywood came home in the following place with a 10:52 time.
Ruby Daly’s 12:16 time was enough to earn her 12th place as the other Rugby representative in the youngest category.
In the nine-to-ten years category, which required a 150m swim, a 1600m bike ride and a 1000m run, Layla Rose finished eighth (17:46), followed by William Stiles in 14th (18:31), Holly Allen in 15th (18:33), and Niamh Daly in 21st (19:48) – who all finished below the 20 minute mark.
Sebastian Tobin (26th, 21:57), Edith Heywood (28th, 22:12), Alex Stainton (29th, 23:16) and Aaron Morris (31st, 25:19) completed the rest of the entrants.
The 11-12 years event took place over the course of a 200m swim, followed by a 3200m bike ride and 2000m run.
Emily Hayward finished 11th (28:20), closely followed by Scarlett Sanders in 14th (29:15) and Georgia Stiles in 16th (29:57) all finished inside 30 minutes.
