A NETBALL star put a Rugby school’s squad through their paces at a special training session.
Wasps Netballer Sam May coached a group of 11-16-year-old girls at The Avon Valley School.
During an intensive netball masterclass the Australian, who plays in goal defence or wing defence, helped the students improve their game with a range of drills focusing on passing and receiving.
Sam plays for Wasps Netball, who were founded in 2016 and compete in the Vitality Netball Superleague – the highest level of domestic netball in the UK. In the team’s inaugural season they were crowned Superleague champions, and have since secured back-to-back league titles.
Following the visit, PE teacher Leigh Hallam said: “We are really grateful to Sam for visiting us and working with our netball squad. All the girls thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt a lot which they will hopefully apply to their game.
“Meeting a top player who plays for a top team has really inspired our players and is an experience they will remember.”
Head teacher Alison Davies said: “It is very important for our students to have positive role models whom they can look up to and aspire to be like.
“Being coached by a successful netball player has been a wonderful opportunity for the students involved and we hope to work with Wasps’ netball team again in the future.”
