A NOSTALGIC spring fayre to celebrate VE Day was held at a Rugby care home.

Anya Court Care Home hosted a 1940s-themed event for residents, relatives and members of the community to mark 74 years since the surrender of Germany in the Second World War.

During his last week of office, former Mayor Tom Mahoney was among over 80 guests at the event, which raised £320 for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Staff dressed up in wartime outfits and invited visitors to enjoy vintage sweets, ice cream, cake, a raffle, a tombola and special performance from Rob Wilson, who sang a variety of classic songs.

During the afternoon, pony rides were available for visiting children, alongside face painting, a petting zoo and a replica war tank.

Resident Amy Cooke, 90, said: “The spring fayre was a lovely afternoon with so much going on. There was an amazing variety of activities on the day.

“Hats off to the lifestyles team for their costumes and organisation.”

Anya Court general manager Laura Russell said: “I couldn’t be prouder of what my team achieved.

“It was such a wonderful day for the residents at the home, their family and friends, members of the local community and the team here at Anya Court.”

The care home’s lifestyle leader Sue Mitchell said: “It was an absolutely amazing afternoon. Every single smile melted my heart and made all of the planning worthwhile.”
