VIPs attend school's celebration of the arts

A CELEBRATION of the arts was held at Knightlow C of E Primary School in Stretton-on-Dunsmore.

VIPs including Rugby Mayor Bill Lewis and Kenilworth and Southam MP Jeremy Wright were invited to a musical performance to launch the school’s Stories 4 Schools book, All Creatures Great and Small.

The school works with the Stories 4 Schools charity each year to produce a book from scratch, using text and illustrations produced by pupils.

This year’s book, and accompanying performance, was inspired by a whole focus on the concept of creation.

The children considered their roles as stewards of the planet, writing stories, poems and creating artwork with an environmental focus.

Head teacher Jill Vavasour said: “Learning is about so much more than what can be shown in test outcomes. We truly believe that a curriculum rich in art, music, dance, drama and wholehearted participation is essential to enable the children to thrive.

“Using the arts as our platform for a whole school project is one of our favourite ways of capturing the children’s imagination and bringing creativity to life.”

The school has been part of Arts Council England’s Artsmark programme – the creative quality standard for schools – for seven years and is aiming for Platinum status.

Artsmark Senior Programme Manager Helen Frost said: “The children of Knightlow School are confident, outgoing and really proud to show us their artistic achievements musically, visually and through their performances.”
