Kind pupils helping to feed hungry children in world’s poorest countries

GENEROUS pupils have been packaging food for hungry children in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Avon Valley School threw its support behind charity Feed the Hungry UK after husband-and-wife volunteers and former school employees Elaine and Andy Stock visited the school in April following a trip to Kibera, Kenya.

The school raised over £800 by holding a non-uniform day with the proceeds going to the charity. The money was then used to buy food, from which pupils created over 5,000 food packets.

During geography lessons, students from Years 7, 8 and 10 worked with the charity’s staff and formed a production line to create the food packs, which included soya, lentils, rice and enough nutrients provide a meal for six people.

The packets will be sent to Burkina Faso and should arrive there by the end of July.

Former assistant head teacher Elaine said: “We have been very privileged to have visited Kenya to be able to help feed and educate the young people there.

“Many of the people in the Kibera area live in extreme poverty yet they value their education. Helping to feed them so that they can attend school is so very important and that is why we’re taking our experiences to schools and businesses so they too can help.”

Achievement Leader Lisa Owen said: “In geography students learn about the conditions found in less developed countries and they understand their need for support.

“Young people rarely get the opportunity to have a direct impact upon the lives of people thousands of miles away. However, the efforts of students involved in making the food packs will have an impact and will help to feed people who have very little.”

Head teacher Alison Davies said “Our students and their families are always generous and never shy away from supporting local, national and international charities.

“I am very pleased that we’ve had chance to support Feed the Hungry, and the work done by two much-loved former employees.”

Since being founded in 1987, Feed the Hungry has delivered over £156million of food and supplies to hungry people in 92 nations. Visit www.feedthehungry.org.uk for more information.
