Lutterworth town centre drinking restrictions extended

RESTRICTIONS on public drinking in Lutterworth town centre are to continue – while similar plans are afoot on regulations to help tackle irresponsible dog owners.

A controlled drinking zone which was introduced in 2016 has been extended for a further three years, after more than 90 per cent of residents agreed it helped reduce anti-social drinking.

In a public consultation by Harborough District Council (HDC), 80 of the 86 responses supported an extension to a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) which allows police to remove alcohol from people who are committing or may commit anti-social behaviour.

HDC has also launched a new six-week consultation to renew a PSPO relating to dog owners.

If extended, council officers will be able to issue fixed penalty notices and potentially prosecute through the courts if a dog owner fails to remove dog faeces or does not have the means to pick it up, or does not put a dog on a lead after a request by an authorised officer.

Owners of assistance dogs used by the blind or deaf, and those who are unable to comply with the legislation due to a disability, are exempt from the regulations.
