A PRESTIGIOUS essay prize has been won by a Rugby School pupil.

Daniel Chow, 17, won Oxford University’s Brearley Essay Prize for his essay on whether countries should undertake long-term economic planning.

The competition is run by The Stubbs Society, the university’s oldest and most illustrious forum for scholarship in international history, grand strategy and foreign affairs.

Daniel said he was honoured to be awarded the Economics prize in the competition and to have the opportunity to discuss his ideas further at Oxford.

He said: “The failure of neoliberal policies in improving economic development in the developing world made me wonder whether they should take a different approach.

“So, upon hearing of the Brearley Essay Competition, I chose to answer the question on strategic economic planning, and argued that this was the best approach to development.”

Economics and Politics teacher Herman Lam said it was an honour to support Daniel in providing him with reading that suited his interest and talking through ideas.

“His essay demonstrates excellent engagement with the historical context of development economics and was well-evidenced with examples drawn from around the world,” he added.

The Brearley Essay Prize is named after the The Stubbs Society’s American founder and pioneer of women’s education, and is the flagship outreach programme for Year 12 students.
