Warren sparks Welsh win

Rugby Editorial 13th Nov, 2019   0

A HARD-FOUGHT 14-5 win has kept Rugby Welsh in touch of the Midlands Five West (South) summit after beating Keresley at Alwyn Road.

Rugby continue to sit three points behind leaders Chaddesley Corbett in second as a result of the victory, and initially dominated possession despite finding Keresley’s rigid line tough to break through.

The visitors caused a switch in momentum and eventually took the lead with an unconverted try after coming out with the ball from a Welsh defensive scrum.

An injury to Ross Mawby added to Rugby’s woes, though they were able to edge themselves in front following a quickly-taken penalty that sent substitute Jason Warren through to claim an converted score before half time.

With the conditions worsening, the game became a stop-start affair in the second half, although Welsh managed to add to their lead when Warren emerged from a maul to score his second converted try of the afternoon.

Adam Bond controlled proceedings in midfield to shut out the visitors from Coventry, who were unable to rescue the game with time ticking away.

Rugby visit sixth-placed Redditch on Saturday (2.15pm).
