Prisoner at jail near Rugby charged with attempted murder and assault

Rugby Editorial 20th Feb, 2020   0

A PRISONER at a jail near Rugby has been charged with attempted murder and assault by beating after staff members were injured in two separate incidents.

HMP Onley inmate Joshua Kendall, 26, originally from Essex, has been charged in connection with incidents on January 22 and February 8 in which prison staff suffered minor injuries.

He is due to appear at Northampton Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday February 20).

Officers from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit have been working with the Ministry of Justice as part of their enquiries.

In December, a review into the prison found it had made mixed progress, one year on from an inspection which had found it was ‘fundamentally unsafe’ due to a ‘vicious circle of drugs and violence’.

The review found relationships between staff and prisoners had not improved, with 60 per cent of officers lacking in the skills and confidence to challenge poor behaviour.

But inspectors acknowledged ‘robust action’ had substantially reduced violence.
