Arthur Miller classic to bring 1950s New York to Rugby Theatre

AN AMERICAN classic will bring a taste of 1950s New York to Rugby Theatre next week.

Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge tells the tragic story of dockworker Eddie Carbone in an impoverished Italian-American neighbourhood near the Brooklyn Bridge.

Eddie’s marriage hits a rocky spot when he unwittingly falls in love with his wife’s niece, who they have raised from childhood.

When he agrees to house two family members who are illegal immigrants, the clash of cultures and family jealousies turn his life upside down and draw him inexorably to a terrible end.

Director Vanessa Comer said: “This classic play is often revisited as all of the issues are as relevant today as they were then, and at any time in history – love, family, lust, loss of culture, illegal immigration, homophobia and the meaning of masculinity.

“Everyone should be able to relate to these characters, and feel all of their tortured emotions. When this lovely family are hit by a big tragedy, they all want to pull together but can’t understand each other.

“The play is based on a true story that Miller was told when he worked on the docks himself, and is one of his most popular plays, along with Death of a Salesman and The Crucible. The tale is completely gripping and the cast are loving these huge acting challenges.”

A View from the Bridge opens on Saturday (February 22) and continues for a seven-performance run until February 29.
