RUGBY Town director Neil Melvin is hopeful the club’s good run of form will not be hindered by a prolonged break in action.
After putting together a three-match winning run, Valley have suffered frustration since their last fixture – a 2-0 success over Harborough Town on February 8 – with this Saturday’s scheduled trip to Peterborough Northern Star (3pm) falling three weeks after they last stepped foot on to the pitch.
Three successive postponements have followed in recent weeks, with last weekend’s away day at Oadby Town the latest to result in a washout.
Melvin, like many others at Town, is understandably desperate to see the club get back to business and hopes Rugby can resume their place on top of the United Counties League Premier Division come Saturday evening.
“It’s a pity as we had been on a run of eight wins in nine outings and we’d made our way to the top of a very tight table in the process.
“Unlike the previous week when the entire schedule was pretty much wiped out, our game was one of only a couple called off this time and it gave teams around us the chance to regain ground again.”
As a result of their recent inactivity, Valley have dropped to third in the table on 51 points, with both Loughborough University (53 points) in second and new leaders Quorn (54 points) both moving above Carl Adams’ side.
Rugby will hope for a smoother task against Peterborough this weekend, having had to rely on Ryan Seal’s 85th-minute strike to give them a 1-0 victory in October’s match in which they finished with ten men after two yellows for Dylan Parker.
