RUGBY Borough Council (RBC) will receive a further £162,000 from the Government to help pay for its response to coronavirus.
And Warwickshire County Council will receive £3.45million as part of a £500 million package of additional support for local authorities.
During the outbreak, RBC stepped in to help provide the shielding hub to ensure support was available for those most at risk from coronavirus and also temporarily took on Rugby Food Bank when volunteers were unable to operate it.
In total, since the pandemic began, RBC has received nearly £1.3million from central government and Warwickshire County Council just over £28.1million.
This additional support forms part of a package of support aimed to help councils respond to the pandemic, including a new scheme to help local authorities recover lost income, such as from car parks and museums, which have been shut during the lockdown.
Rugby MP Mark Pawsey said: “Local authorities such as Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council have been at the forefront of the local response to coronavirus.
“I know I speak for many residents when I say ‘thank you’ to their staff who have worked tirelessly during the pandemic. I am pleased that the government has also recognised this work, and the tremendous pressures that local councils are under, and have brought forward this unprecedented package of relief to ensuring councils come through this difficult period with stable finances.”
“As a former Rugby borough councillor, and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for District Councils, I know how important a sound financial footing is for local government so that they can provide the services which many of us rely on. This extra £500 million shows that the government is listening to these concerns and will stand behind local government during the coronavirus pandemic.”
