Rugby man disqualified from driving after fleeing crash scene

A DRIVER who fled the scene of a crash, leaving behind a seriously injured passenger, has been disqualified from driving.

After pleading guilty to failing to stop, failing to report a road traffic collision and driving a vehicle without insurance, the 22 year old Rugby man was disqualified from driving for 12 months by Leamington Spa Magistrates on February 28.

He was also sentenced to a Community Order to do 200 hours unpaid work within the next year and ordered to pay £110 costs and a £114 Victim Surcharge.

The defendant, who was involved in a two vehicle collision in Lawford Road last August, was summonsed to court after fleeing the scene and leaving behind a seriously injured passenger.

Hannah Smith, who prosecuted the man on behalf of Warwickshire Police, said: “We hope he will use the 12 month disqualification to reflect on what happened and to consider the effect of his actions on those involved.

“Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership already has some initiatives to support new and learner drivers to help improve their safety on our roads and aims to do more to ensure young drivers understand the risks to themselves and other road users.”

In January, the Partnership hosted a free online webinar for new and learner drivers.  The webinar covered subjects from choosing a first car and vehicle maintenance to new driver safety.  Visit https://tinyurl.com/4jaazaj8 to watch the session.

The Partnership also works with First Car Approved Driving Instructors to deliver road safety campaign The Honest Truth to learner drivers via driving instructors, to develop the decision-making skills they need to stay safe when first driving on their own.
